A Step-by Step Guide for a Clutter-Free Home

Life gets messy. Sometimes there is no avoiding it and things pile up. If you’ve found yourself in a situation where the clutter is starting to get out of control, then you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to walk you through all the steps you need to take to declutter your home. But first, we want to say this.

Go Easy On Yourself

When our homes get cluttered it’s easy for us to feel like we’re not keeping up with our duties, or that we’re lacking somehow. But this is not the case whatsoever. While a clean and neat home is wonderful, it’s okay when things get away from us. We’re all human.

Don’t Put It Off

While you shouldn’t beat yourself up for letting things get out of control, it’s essential that you get on top of the clutter now. If you don’t, it can keep piling and piling, which is not only more difficult to organize, it’s dangerous for our health.

Step One: Make a Plan

Before you start grabbing things and moving them around, it’s important to plan out where and how you’re going to tackle this job. You can organize things by category and assign areas and rooms of your home as a base for certain items. For example, move all business items to the office.

Step Two: Sort Accordingly

Plan on sorting everything you go through according to three criteria. What you’ll keep, what you’ll toss, and what you’ll donate. The general rule of thumb for clothing is that if you haven’t worn it in a year, you don’t need it anymore. If you’re dealing with a lot of junk you might want to rent a dumpster for the job.

Step Three: Get Started

Once you have a plan and know how you’re going to sort everything, we suggest you jump right in. Be sure to have things like garbage bags and boxes for donations. Just be honest with yourself about what you truly need.

Step Four: Be Realistic

If you have a small clutter problem, then it should take you no time to get the job done. If your clutter is overwhelming to the point of causing you anxiety, then don’t expect to get the job done in a day, or even a week. Set goals that you can reach and the job will get done.

Step Five: Reward Yourself

Cleaning up a mess is a lot of work, even if you’re the one who made the mess. And yes, you will feel a great sense of reward when you make a dent in your clutter, but there’s nothing wrong with a little snack or something to reward yourself for a job well done. Just don’t choose a reward that adds to the clutter.

Step Six: Ask for Help

Having more clutter than one can handle is an overwhelming situation. It causes anxiety and can make us feel like we’ll never climb out of it. If this is the case, then you should consider hiring a professional junk removal service to clean your place for you. They will do it respectfully and work with you every step of the way.
